Watch Toyah Willcox and Robert Fripp Cover Green Day’s “Basket Case”

King Crimson founder Robert Fripp and his wife, singer Toyah Willcox, have shared a cover of Green Day’s pop-punk classic “Basket Case” – watch it below.

The cover is part of the couple’s “Sunday Lunch” video series which launched in 2020. The series has so far seen the couple share renditions of songs by Ramones, Nirvana, David Bowie, Metallica, Billy Idol, The Rolling Stones, Judas Priest, The Prodigy, Guns N’ Roses, Alice Cooper and many more via Willcox’s YouTube channel.

In recent weeks, they’ve covered Smashing Pumpkins’ “Bullet With Butterfly Wings” and delivered their version of The Black Keys’ “Lonely Boy.” Last week, the couple shared a cover of Neil Young’s “Rockin’ In The Free World” with the message, “A free world for all is bullshit dogs.”

Green Day’s “Basket Case” originally appeared on their breakthrough 1994 album “Dookie.” For their cover however, Willcox put a wicker basket over his head and played drums with a pair of eggplants. In the background, the couple hung a banner that reads: “May your basket be overflowing with love”.

You can watch their latest coverage below:

In August, Willcox released her 16th studio album “Posh Pop”, which she premiered with the single “Levitate” featuring Simon Darlow and Bobby Willcox.

Discuss the album in an interview with NME, Willcox explained how it happened. “When COVID shut down everything last year, it allowed me to focus on writing and recording the next album,” she said. “We recorded in Simon’s outdoor studio with just him, my husband and me.

“‘Posh Pop’ was a magical experience created by the need and ability to connect with our fans in a sincere way. Also the terrifying distance between those who run the world and those in the field inspired my writing.

She added: “Working with Fripp in the studio, we just handed him the chord charts the night before and said, ‘We want you to come and improvise and that’s what we’ll use.’ spontaneous.”
