On Sunday night, Tyler Childers closed DelFest in Cumberland, Maryland, welcoming festival hosts The Travelin’ McCourys to sit down to a cover of Bobby Weir’s seminal ace track, which has become a Grateful Dead classic, “Greatest Story Ever Told”.
Last month, during Weir’s two-night booth on April 2-3 at New York’s Radio City Music Hall, on the 50th anniversary of his first solo studio album, aceChilders attended the number which was performed both nights.
While Childer’s Radio City delivery held a certain rock-fueled power, his take on the song on Sunday Night drew on his Kentucky roots by infusing the Hunter/Weir-penned lyrics with a healthy dose of bluegrass melody.
Childer’s pipes were a perfect fit for the melody, which carried great energy until the song’s last line: “You know, the only thing we need is a left-handed wrench.” Before the final lyrics, the band let the music carry them; they unleashed a quick jam before ending the performance with a joint arc.
