Buffalo Springfield was Stephen Stills and Neil Young’s first band before they reunited as Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young in 1969. The band released three albums, “Buffalo Springfield” (1966), “Buffalo Springfield Again” (1967) and “Last Time Around” (1968).
“For What Its Worth” was recorded the day after the debut album was released and added to the second pressing in 1967. Stills wrote the song about the Sunset Strip curfew riots and clashes between Los Angeles police and young people of the time. Buffalo Springfield had a residency at Whiskey a Go Go in Sunset at the time. The curfew meant that all Sunset events had to end by 10 p.m. Music fans leaving the premises after 10 p.m. have been charged with loitering. Fans revolted over the violation of their civil rights. It all culminated with a protest on November 12, 1966. Stills wrote the song about the time and recorded the track on December 5, 1966. The song quickly became one of the great protest songs of its time.
Buffalo Springfield ‘For What Its Worth’ reached number 7 in the US.
In 2011 Stevie released another song called “For What It’s Worth”, but it was a different song written by Stevie featuring Mike Campbell of the Heartbreakers.
