Editor’s Note

This week is devoted to revisiting the issues that made the cover of Good time pass. First there is Jacob Piercecover of the article on the 10th anniversary of the Gibbs report. If you are like “… Bob Gibbs-but if you’ve been living in Santa Cruz for some time, you are certainly familiar with the debate it has sparked over the future of this city. His suggestion that Pacific Avenue should be redesigned for two-way traffic through downtown was probably the best-known (and for many locals, most hated) recommendation. But more importantly, his general thesis that attracting car traffic from shoppers was more important than keeping Santa Cruz’s legacy of a pedestrian mall – and certainly more important than heading to streets more suitable for bikes. – became the impetus for a great retreat. versus a car-focused city center. The cover story explores that story, and where we might go from here. (Personally, I wonder what would have happened when the pandemic hit, if the city had followed Gibbs’ recommendations. Would restaurants have even had space for parklets that essentially saved our dining scene?)

Also in this issue is a follow-up on our old cover topic Kaethe Hostetter, who the last time we wrote about her had returned from Ethiopia to Santa Cruz, after the pandemic dashed her plans for a world tour with her ensemble QWANQWA. Now, Aaron Carnes catches up with her as she presents a multimedia solo show at the tannery.

Finally, I want to mention a Veterans Day show this week with Keith greeninger, who I wrote about for a cover last year. We all know Keith does an amazing job in this community, but in my 2020 post I mentioned his song “22 Angels”, which was about to be released on his new album at the time. This song, about the suicide epidemic among veterans and active-duty men and women in the United States Armed Forces, struck a chord with families across the country, and it is perhaps the most important that he ever wrote. He will play it when he performs on Sunday November 7th at the “Felton Still Remembers” event in Hallcrest Vineyards from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Joint Chiefs, A country and michael gaither also perform. Tickets are $ 37.50, go to hallcrestvineyards.com.
