HMV’s new Oxford store brings 15 jobs and thousands of records and CDs

Music giant HMV is bringing 15 new jobs to Oxford as it opens a store in Cornmarket.

The 9,000 square foot store will be located in the former Gap store at the Clarendon Center. The Gap branch closed last month as part of a nationwide shutdown program.

HMV had a store in Cornmarket until it closed in 2014.

The chain survived in different forms before being taken over by Canadian Doug Putman, who relaunched it in the UK.

HMV said the store, which will open in the middle of next month, will feature 16,000 products across two floors, with an entire floor dedicated to 5,000 different vinyl records.

There will be a new HMV delivery service, allowing customers to order any item that is not in store directly to their door.

In addition to vinyl, the store will also carry 5,000 different CDs, 3,000 DVD and 4K HD Blu Ray movies and TV shows, as well as 3,000 pop culture products.

The first 100 customers will receive a goodie bag – the exact opening date has not yet been revealed.

Store Manager Paul Williams said: “We are very happy to be back in Oxford and look forward to welcoming everyone to the new store.

“We’re always recruiting for new roles, so if you’re passionate about pop culture and love all things music and film, we’d love to hear from you.”

HMV Managing Director Phil Halliday said: “As we celebrate our 100th anniversary, we are delighted to return to the heart of Oxford.

“The new store has an incredible lineup of vinyl records, and it’s great to be able to carry some incredible turntables from local distributor Henley Audio.

“As the UK continues to open up, we will be offering in-store events and signings from top artists and performances by local artists.”

Oxford City Council Chief Susan Brown said: “HMV is an iconic brand, which we are delighted to welcome back to Oxford city center.

“A lot of people, including me, were sad to see the previous store on Cornmarket shut down. It’s great news that they’re back.

“The new store will bring more jobs to Oxford and be a good addition to our bustling city center.
