Bull Moose is moving its Portsmouth, NH store

0

After 26 years in Portsmouth city centre, Bull Moose is moving to a new, larger location just two miles away.

But it may as well be 200 miles as the entertainment retailer goes from being surrounded by the ‘cool’ of Congress Street to the convenience of a small mall on Woodbury Avenue that once housed a Strawberries, the store’s epitome of suburban records from the 70s and 80s.

Bull Moose spokesman Mick Werkhoven said while people may have a preconceived idea of what a music store looks like in a mini-mall, Bull Moose’s new location is the exception.

“I think this place is kind of nice because it has really high ceilings with exposed ductwork and almost industrial lighting, so it has a kind of warehouse feel to it which I think will preserve some of that vibe” cool “” Werkhoven told Seacoast Current.

What is old is reused

Werkhoven said many CD and record bins on Congress Street are moving, but will be spaced out a bit further. Fixtures from the former Bull Moose Portland location will be used on Woodbury Avenue.

“We’re taking pieces from two well-worn stores, downtown stores in the basement, and putting them in a new box,” Werkhoven said.

Why make the move in the first place? Werkhoven said the new, larger location will allow the store to expand, offer more and upgrade to be more in line with other Bull Moose locations. The current location is “classic and iconic” and small, so it was difficult to make changes.

“If we wanted to add more light fixtures, it’s really difficult at the old location. We really wanted to try to put books in there, but there’s not really room for them,” Werkhoven said. “And it’s been five or six years since we lost the parking lot that was right behind the building, so parking and accessibility is a real issue for customers, staff and deliveries.”

It’s time to move

Werkhoven said after a tough 6-8 months during the pandemic, business is good at the Congress Street store, so now is the time to go to a bigger space.

“It’s pretty well organized, which is part of the momentum of the move. Things are going well, so let’s move into a new space with more space,” Werkhoven said. “We do our thing. We buy things back, we put things on the shelf, people come in,

The new location will also have room for artist meetups when groups are more comfortable doing them.

The biggest new feature of the new store will be a larger book department with new fiction and non-fiction releases and a wide selection of Manga. Inventory will increase significantly at the Woodbury Avenue location, with workers receiving special training to become booksellers.

The move to the new location is underway and Bull Moose has yet to announce the Congress Street store closing and Woodbury Avenue opening. The store has suspended redemptions in Porstmouth until further notice.
